Betsy's help was crucial during my son's first days. He was born pre-term, and we were sent home with a baby who couldn't nurse. Betsy came (on a holiday weekend!) to my home, and with a few expert moves, positioned my little one to latch. It was amazing to watch him eat at my breast for the very first time! Betsy continued to support us while we struggled with feeding issues caused by his prematurity and traumatic birth, and put us in touch with experts who could get us additional help. If it weren't for you, Betsy, my son would most likely be eating formula now. Thank you for everything!

My husband and I were a part of Betsy’s Spring 2012 class with 4 other couples. The entire experience was fun, and informative and enjoyable. I wanted to write to share how much we appreciated everything that we learned in her class.

When we attended class we’d planned on having a midwife attended home birth. Unfortunately we ended up going to the hospital and ultimately with a c-section. The information and skills we had from Betsy’s class were invaluable in our 5 day hospital stay. We brought The Birth Partner and the class workbook with us to the hospital and referred to them at every impasse. Some of our birth story was pretty traumatic for me at the time, but I have a lot of peace in knowing that we were able to make well informed decisions every step of the way. Betsy emphasizes “healthy mom, healthy baby” and from our experience the knowledge she shares in her class meets this goal perfectly, and prepares couples for the unexpected world of labor and childbirth.

Last year I was pregnant with twins. It was a surprise pregnancy and though I was very excited, I also felt overwhelmed by everything my fiancé and I needed to do to prepare. One of those things was a childbirth class. My fiancé found Betsy's class and it appealed to us because we both wanted to be very involved in the birth. I'm so glad that this is the class we signed up for! There are several things I feel sets this apart from other childbirth classes. One thing is being invited into Betsy's home. Since childbirth is an intimate thing, it was nice to have the intimacy of being a guest in her home extended to us. It was also a relaxing environment for me. I liked the occasional visit from the kitten and hearing chickens outside the window. Another thing is the food. Being pregnant, I had a very limited attention span for any activity that did not involve this! Each week there is a different theme such as green foods or foods high in protein, etc. It is a potluck and everyone learns about the benefit of that week's
food while getting yummy things to snack on while learning. Betsy's teaching style is very to-the-point, complete information, peppered with some humor. She has many different ways of teaching including discussion, games, role play, charts, stuffed animals (ok stuffed boobs), and diagrams, so every learning style is accommodated. By the time I went into labor we felt prepared! We had created a realistic birth plan and even a plan B and C in case things didn't go as planned. We got so much out of Betsy's class, we decided to ask her to be our doula! I've learned on the day I gave birth and in the months since, that Betsy has amazing bed-side manner. She is always a breath of fresh air. She has helped me through many a plugged duct and other breast feeding challenges. Babies love her! I cannot say enough about Betsy, in every capacity. I highly recommend this class, Betsy's doula services, and Betsy as a lactation consultant!

I was having trouble nursing my newborn in the days following a c-section, and just when I was feeling very discouraged, Betsy came to my home for a 2-hour lactation consult, and was so amazingly helpful. She was warm and professional, and made me and my husband feel at ease right away. She did a great job of explaining the problem and ways to address to it. By the time she left, my son was latching properly and nursing like a champ!

I gave birth last week and have had a really difficult time breastfeeding my new baby. So on Saturday, when I was feeling incredibly low from the extreme pain and bleeding and ready to give up, I called Betsy.

She came over later that morning and she quickly pointed out what my issues were and assessed what my son might be going through as well. It was a tremendously helpful session. She has a great spirit and works wonderfully with a scatterbrained and sleep-deprived mom. I felt comfortable asking her questions and she was very accessible and open. I am so glad I called her. I feel like a new person!

Personally, I would highly recommend this class to pregnant moms! In December I had my first baby and was very prepared for my labor, which went well, but the hard part came a couple days after birth when the baby was really hungry, but was hurting me too much for me to let her eat. This of course was a crisis for a new mom, so I looked up our local West Seattle La Leche League leader. I called Betsy, and she came out on the freezing cold afternoon to help me.
Right away she identified the problem, explained it really well, and helped me fix it. For our issue we had to see a doctor who specializes in breastfeeding, so Betsy made sure I had a game plan for the few days it would take to get in to see her. My midwife came by for a post-partum visit at the same time and was very impressed, and since has called me to get Betsy's name to give to other clients.
I was totally unprepared for problems with breastfeeding and I wish that I had gone to a class like this!
I credit Betsy for the fact that within a month of my baby's birth we were able to breastfeed without any problems.
